Ashby

December2023

Of course, this was our Christmas party and we had lots of fun! With a buffet, the Whitwick U3A choir singing Christmas songs with us, reverse bingo and a raffle.

September2023

Here we welcomed Katie Smith, Area Development Manager for Parkinson’s UK, talking about her work, particularly liaising with NHS services.

At the same meeting we also had Lynda Raven, the Participant Engagement Coordinator from the PALOMA research project based in Castle Donington. She recruited several of the participants into the study and their research is ongoing. She will be returning to our group to give an update in March this year.

July 2023 – Ulverscroft Manor Trip.

A group of us went to Ulverscroft Manor for the day in July and were extremely lucky with beautiful weather. We were well fed and looked after! We enjoyed it so much that we are arranging another trip very soon.

Since our last update, which seems a long time ago now, the group has continued to thrive in the Whitwick Methodist Church Hall.

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month from 14.00 to 16.00 Hrs.

Our activity group has settled in well to the new premises at Whitwick Methodist Church. Car parking is plentiful and the hall and kitchen facilities ideal. There’s also home - made jam and marmalade on sale there which has proved very popular!

The first meeting we had in Whitwick was on the 4th of May when we welcomed Stewart Shepherd, Chair of the ‘Hospice Hope’ charity who gave a very informative and amusing presentation about the work of Hospice Hope and its volunteers.

The charity works within Northwest Leicestershire to support individuals and their carers who have any condition which leads to a reduction in quality of life or who have a life limiting condition.

The charity currently runs weekly support cafés in 3 different towns in the area and is due to get the keys to a brand-new building, ‘Bright Hope House’ on 16th October which will serve as a day care centre.

Our members generously donated £206.70 to the charity on the day.

Forthcoming Activities

The Ashby Exercise Class

Ashby de la Zouch Exercise Classes.

There are now 3 exercise classes a week in Ashby de la Zouch. They take place during term times and are held at the Ashby Leisure Centre and Lido.

The third exercise class was able to start as a result of a 12 month grant from Parkinson’s UK via an organisation called the ‘Boost Charitable Trust’. We were delighted to find that the organisation has taken a special interest in the class and as a result, a professional photographer and a representative from Parkinson’s UK came along to one of our classes in October.

These are just a couple of the photographs taken on the day and the organisation hope to use some in their next annual report.

Times of classes:

Wednesday 13.30 to 14.30

Thursday 10.15 to 11.15

Thursday 11.30 to 12.30

All classes are run by Sue Forrest, specialist physiotherapist.

Attendances must be booked in advance by contacting Sue.
